Standley is one of the oldest villages in Hong Kong. Even a hundred and fifty years ago it was a large fishing-village.
People called it Chik Chu. The village has changed a lot since the arrival of the British in 1841. When the British sailors came in that year, they began to call the village Standley. Lord Standley was a famous Englishman at that time. English people have calledit Standley since then.

The Post Office in Britain is famous for getting letters and parcels to their destinations(目的地). The problem is that we the public have to observe the rules. One day in 1925 John Baird pulled an office boy into his workroom and sat him down in front of his equipment. he boy’s face could be seen on the simple screen a few feet away. That office boy was the first person ever to appear on television! Baird was the son of a clergyman(牧师). He went to a technical college and then to Glasgow University. It was there he first had the idea of transmitting pictures.
He was not a healthy man. That’s why he was rejected for army service at the time of the first world war and had to work in a power station. After the war he tried to set up in business several times without real success. Returning to London he started again on his idea of television.
He was so poor that he accepted an offer to show his experiments in a big London store. Money from his parents allowed him to continue his work. When he gained more success and transmitted a reasonably clear picture over long distances, he was offered help. Businessmen who before had refused to help now eagerly offered to share in the development of this invention. Big companies in America spent a lot of money in improving his equipment. When the BBC made the first ever television broadcast in 1936, American equipment was used. When the BBC started its equipment from Baird’s own company.
John Baird died in 1946 and did not live to see television enter the majority of homes in Britain.
